The result of all these civil wars was complete destruction.
Maybe we should have taken a hint from all those wars we fought "over there" and the footage came back showing entire cities now only towering, shattered icons that stood in piles of rubble.
Uninhabited. uninhabitable.
Yet this one woman stayed there. This was her new home, she repeated stubbornly. She wasn't leaving. Even though it meant eventual death.
If the warring armies didn't...
3) Time Bent
Author
Description
Time haunted her. It didn't do what it was "supposed to" when she was around.
It ran forward, backwards, sideways. Sometimes time helped her solve her problems, sometimes it made them worse. For a lovely young woman, you'd think there would be young men lined up to talk to her at any gathering. But, she stayed away from them - to protect them from her curse.
What would be the good of a commitment like that if the other person was going to age too...

A different take on time travel. Very different.
What if the "grandfather murder conundrum" didn't exist? Where you could freely travel in time without affecting your or anyone else's present?
The trick is that this also tends to "haunt" you, even drive you insane...
Try talking to a time-bender and see if you don't get confused half-way through the conversation. Because your idea of the past isn't what a time-bender experiences. Your time is linear....

It wasn't often a song stopped me dead in my tracks. All I could do was listen.
And I was filled with feelings of peace and hope. So much I didn't want to move, just listen.
Now there wasn't a tune, a melody, or words to that song. But I was transfixed. If I could have tapped my foot to keep time, I would. It was a catchy song, and filled my heart to overflowing with love and understanding.
A siren's song.
But not of lust and longing for carnal...

The more circuits in any machine, the more it's likely to get "haunted."
When you connect it to the Internet then you can get more than you asked for.
Installing a home system seemed obvious at the time. Having the "Internet of Things" to give you your every whim seemed a dream come true.
When our broadband costs rocketed, we looked to see what usage was happening - too many videos, too many games, was someone parked at the curb outside our house...

He knew something he was listening/watching was poisoning and killing him.
Slowly. Painfully. Sinking into a gradual depression and dying of apathy.
He'd seen this happen to others. Suicide, drug overdose. All a permanent solution to a very temporary problem.
Then she showed up. Not your typical haunting ghost or vindictive spirit. Different. In a good way.
She'd come just to solve his mystery - the one he didn't know he had. It was a haunting...

I was walking in my pasture one sunny afternoon, when a pair of hands pulled me into the underworld.
Once I arrived, I relaxed, a bit. Because it was an old friend. Carol. A time-bender and now a Lazurai as well. Meaning she could walk through rock, and other things. "Hi John. How have you been?" Carol was standing in front of a crystal fireplace, warming herself from the magma heat that was channeled out of the earth's core.
"Not bad, Carol....

I'd been left out here, alone. By an oil-burning lamp. In the cold, uncaring desert.
It was my only comfort until dawn.
Just dawn started bringing the earliest glimmer of what I could see with my human eyes, I woke to some snuffling sound near my head.
Opening my eyes, not relishing the hot day coming, I saw the nose of an animal near my face.
"Rise, little one."
I sat up. And, saw eye-to-eye with a female coyote.
She was not young. Scars crisscrossed...

An old clock tower, with an unsolved death, that the ghost still haunted.
Once a year she appeared. Right on the calendar date of her death. Not that she wasn't also seen during the day, some rumors said, but that was a real person. A flesh version.
Who was also haunted by the mysterious death.
The mystery was, who pushed the young woman, or did she simply slip? Why the lights in the upper bell tower, and why three of them? Too many for a single...

The Sum of the Whole is Greater Than Its Parts.
So Gaia was taught since she came into this existence.
But, she was named after the Nature goddess. Long centuries and eons passed while she was submerged in rock beneath the thin surface layers that living creatures inhabited.
Now some imbalance had awakened her. She rose to the surface to claim her own, her rightful place in the whole world, not just beneath it.
What she found surprised even an...

It's not often these days that you read about a real goddess.
One who was a lover of Ulysses – and saved his butt more than he would care to admit (and never told his biographer.) And one who influenced history for good and bad in more ways than you know.
But only the very worst stories about how she looked and acted have been passed down through the ages.
So she kidnapped a writer to tell it straight. Only he had to write this as fiction, since...
